In a significant move towards promoting health and wellness in Uganda, Carrefour, under the ownership of Majid Al Futtaim, has announced a UGX 7 million sponsorship for the Kyambogo Ultra Challenge Run set to take place on May 4, 2024, at the Kyambogo University Cricket Oval. This sponsorship underscores Carrefour’s commitment to fostering healthy lifestyles among Ugandans and supporting community initiatives that promote physical fitness.
The Kyambogo Ultra Challenge Run, now in its 14th edition, stands as Uganda’s sole ultra-challenge marathon, attracting runners from various clubs across Kampala and beyond. Organized annually since 2010, the marathon serves not only as a test of endurance but also as a platform for participants aspiring to compete in continental-level marathons.
Christophe Orcet, Regional Director – East Africa at Majid Al Futtaim Retail, emphasized the company’s dedication to community impact, stating, “We are committed to making a positive difference in the communities where we operate. Our sponsorship of the Kyambogo Ultra Challenge Run aligns with this commitment, emphasizing health and well-being while leveraging the unifying power of sports.”
Julius Nkuraija, CEO of Kyambogo Ultra Challenge Run, welcomed Carrefour’s support, expressing gratitude for their involvement in this year’s edition. “We are thrilled to have Carrefour as a sponsor for the 14th Kyambogo Ultra Challenge Run,” said Nkuraija. “Their generous support is instrumental in ensuring the success of this event and in furthering awareness about health and fitness in Uganda.”
Nkuraija also hinted at future environmental initiatives tied to the run’s growth, aiming to embrace a cause for environmental protection as the event gains momentum.
Carrefour’s sponsorship of the Kyambogo Ultra Challenge Run is an extension of the retailer’s broader community engagement efforts, such as the “Round Up Your Bill” initiative. Launched in 2021, this initiative allows customers to donate towards supporting vulnerable groups in neighboring communities. To date, the initiative has raised over UGX 290 million, aiding various projects at institutions like Peculiar Childcare Support, Kireka Home for Disabled Children, Mulago School for The Deaf, Kiswa Primary School, Ntinda School for the Deaf, and The Noah’s Ark Village.
The upcoming Kyambogo Ultra Challenge Run promises to be an inspiring event, combining athletic excellence with community-focused values championed by Carrefour and its commitment to promoting healthier lifestyles across Uganda.
